matilda

Matilda \m(a)-til-da, mat(i)-lda\ as a girl's name is pronounced muh-TIL-dah. It is of Old German origin, and the meaning of Matilda is "mighty in battle". William the Conqueror's Queen Matilda (11th century) brought the name to Britain, when it was pronounced "maud". It was revived in the 18th centuryfor awhile. A saint's name.
